Without question, the greatest, and most essential experience of your life is becoming a Christian – coming to know Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord. God’s Word, the Bible, guides you to this important decision in four simple steps.
Step #1. Realizing God’s perfect plan for your life. And that plan is that God loves you, wants you to spend eternity with Him after you die, and that your present life glorifies Him every day. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." John 3:16 "You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier." 1 Tim. 2:3-4 "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." 1 Cor. 10:31
Step #2. Understanding that you have a spiritual problem that you cannot fix. Even though God loves you, He declares that you have sinned, you have broken His perfect laws, and that the penalty of your sin is eternal death in Hell. "As it is written: 'There is none righteous, no, not one.'" Romans 3:10 "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 6:23 “The soul who sins shall die. The son shall not bear the guilt of the father, nor the father bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon himself.” Ezekiel 18:20
Step #3. Believing the good news of what God has done for you in order that you might escape eternal punishment and enjoy eternal life. Because of God’s great love for you, He has provided a Substitute to take the punishment of your sins in your place. This Substitute was His only beloved, perfect Son, Jesus Christ, and the substitution took place when Jesus died on the cross. And you must believe that Jesus was indeed God’s only Son, and that Jesus did indeed die in your place. And then, after He died, that He rose from the grave and is alive today. "But God demonstrates His own love toward us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8 "For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures." 1 Cor. 15:3-4
If you believe the facts of Jesus’ death on the cross for your sins, His burial, and His resurrection, salvation for you is but one step away.
Step #4. Receiving Jesus Christ as your personal Savior and Lord. Receiving Jesus means that you confess to God that you are a sinner, without hope of eternal life except by His love and forgiveness. It means to turn from your sins as best as you know your heart, and as you turn it means that by faith alone you invite Jesus to come into your life, cleanse you from all of your sins, and save you from eternal destruction. Receiving Jesus means that you pledge to Jesus that you will make Him absolute ruler in your life; that by His strength you will follow Him and obey Him the rest of your life. And when you stumble and sin again (and you will at times), you will simply confess that sin, pick yourself up, and continue to follow. "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name." John 1:12 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life." John 6:47 "That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made until salvation." Romans 10: 9-10 "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast." Ephesians 2: 8-9 "For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus." Galatians 3:26 "For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." Romans 10:13
If you sense that God is speaking to you right now, calling you to believe in Jesus Christ His Son, and as sincerely as you know your own heart and would like to become a follower of Jesus, then pray from your heart a prayer similar to this: “Dear Jesus, I know that I need You in my life. I know that I am a sinner. I know that the penalty of my sins is eternal death in Hell. I know that I am helpless to help myself out of my terrible condition. But as best as I know how, I turn from my sins and turn to You. I believe that You died on the cross, paying the penalty for all of my sins. I believe that You were buried, and that three days later You rose from the grave, and that You are alive forever more. I believe that You are the only way to God. Please come into my life, forgive me for all my sins, save me, and take me to Heaven when I die. Please take complete control of my life right now, and help me to follow You for the rest of my life. Thank you for saving me. Amen.”
